D. J. (Don) Weitzel

Don is the Principal of Weitzel and Associates, with clients throughout the province of British Columbia.

Don has over 38 years of experience in the group insurance covering all aspects of the benefits world. Beginning his career with Mutual Life for the first seven years, he went on to spend the next 10 years with William Mercer Ltd, Consulting Actuaries- and completed his time there as Vice President responsible for Western Provinces Merchandising Operations.

Leaving Mercer in 1986, Don formed his own company- P.I. Professional Integrated Insurance Services Ltd.- a multi-discipline brokerage and consulting operation which became one of the larger Third Party Administrators in Western Canada- and specialized in association and affiliation group- for both benefits and commercial insurance lines. After 18 years of success, the company was sold to their largest client (the ICBA), and Don carried on as Vice-President of ICBA Benefits Ltd. for the next 2 years.

In July of 2008, he changed his role to senior consultant to ICBA Benefits, and established his own consultancy- Weitzel and Associates. Primarily working through ICBA Benefits Ltd., we can provide a complete array of innovative and competitive benefit products and advice - from 1 person businesses to 50,000 employee association groups.

Don is proud to have been involved and contributed to the success of some of the most unique and successful plans in the industry including the Independent Contractors industry wide Hour Bank benefit plans, the Chamber of Commerce plans, package products for small groups (BC Small Business Plan- http://www.benefit-plan.ca/construction-suppliers/default.htm) and many others.

George has managed benefit programs for business owners since 1985 and is the founder of Access Benefit Consultants.  He is a Registered Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP), a Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI), a Chartered Financial Services Broker (CFSB) and a Registered Financial Consultant (RFC).

George is a member of The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, The Canadian Tax Foundation, The Conference for Advanced Life Underwriting, The Strategic Coach Program and for the past 12 years has been a member of the Million Dollar Round Table’s Top of the Table (top 0.2% of life and health insurance producers in the world).

George has spoken internationally as an industry expert to various groups of financial professionals on the topic of management of benefit programs for business owners.  He has authored several financial bulletins on tax favored financial strategies relating to the use of benefits for business owners including: The Retained Earnings Transfer Plan™, The Tax-Free Dividend Solution™ and The Legacy Foundation Program™.

In 2001 George established The Access Foundation Fund (a donor directed fund of the Calgary Foundation) to benefit homeless and youth programs in Calgary.  George’s purpose in founding Access Benefit Consultants was to build and manage a company that is continually the best manager of executive benefit programs for business owners in Western Canada.
